An ebook exclusive Soul Screamers series novella.

Reaper Soul Screamers eBook Rachel Vincent

Reaper is a wonderful look into the troublesome, quirky, yet fun and handsome Tod. I was not expecting the events to play as they did (I can't say though! No Spoilers!!). In the previous installments Tod comes across as very self consumed, even though he shows a softer side here and there. In Reaper he is all human, both literally and figuratively. Reaper also gives us a glimpse of the relationship Tod and Nash had before Tod died.

Novella's such as these are a perfect chance to authors to develop characters from their full novels that might not get as much development as others. Rachel Vincent was not lacking at all in this department. While in the previous installments, especially in My Soul to Save, you are given glimpses ans scenes of Tod's human side, it is in Reaper where he is nothing but human. I fell in love with Tod in this novella. He is hilarious!!

It was also nice to get a different view of Nash as well. In the full novels he is this almost 'perfect' guy/boyfriend, standing by Kaylee's side no mater what. In Reaper is pretty selfish and self involved. Completely different! Now we know what made him grow up: Tod's death. We are also given a glimpse into Nash's relationship with Sabine, who makes her presence in the next installment, My Soul to Steal. Rachel Vincent has done it again! A must read for all fans!!

Reaper Soul Screamers eBook Rachel Vincent Reviews

I'm a horrible owner, really. I stuff it full and never get it all read. Or maybe that makes me a good owner? Whatever it makes me, it leads me to get books like this one. I'll skim for freebies or cheapies, especially ones that may be parts of a series. Especially the shorter novella ones like this. Ones that don't require much time. Win, win. When I don't have much time but want to read, I feel like I cleaned up part of my "To read" list and if it's good then won me over and I run off to buy more.

Thing is with this one, the description grabbed my attention and I failed to note the author or the series. As reading it, I still didn't catch it on. Didn't seem familiar at all. It's about a young man who meets up with a reaper and faces a life or death decision. Well when I got to the end there it was... the ad telling me I might want to check out My Soul to Lose. I already had. I just hadn't seen these two as being connected. Not by the descriptions. Not after having read them both in full. I wasn't sure that My Soul to Lose was enough to make me want to read more, though it was okay. I think to the two combined does make me curious enough about the series to try one full book.
Found this one from the forums and decided to download it and give it a try since it was free. I wasn't disappointed. It reminded me a lot of the short-lived TV series, Dead Like Me, which followed a group of reapers caught up between the living and the dead while having to reap souls until their time was up.

Tod is a teen whose left in charge of his brother Nash who is grounded. Nash's girlfriend is in a teen home for underaged drinking. Despite Mom's orders, Nash sneaks out and gets drunk while Tod is spending time with his girlfriend. Nash calls Tod and makes him come pick him up with the intention of going to break his girlfriend out of the home. But life has different plans when a drunk driver hits them, ultimately killing Nash. But Tod and his family are "bean sadhes" and have special powers. Tod calls upon the reaper to let his brother live and take him instead.

And the reaper has a proposition to make for Tod. He can become a reaper too.

We don't get to see much of the bean sadhe power or learn much about it. In fact, much of the novella covers Tod's conflict with having to leave his family and with becoming a reaper. There's a nice set of characters here which I can see going in all different and interesting directions, filled with possibility. I read it in two days and would definitely read more.

Nice cliff hanger at the end that really pulls you in wanting more! Worth a look, even if you aren't a teen.
In a nutshell, Reaper gives us the back-story on how and why Tod came to be a reaper, his very first introduction to Levi and his first visit home after his death. But it also reveals just a little something else...but you'll have to read it to find out.

It is nice to be able to see things from Tod's perspective and get a bit more insight on who he is - as a son and and older brother - and learn that his sarcasm wasn't something he developed postmortem.

And it's also good to finally know just where all those teaser quotes that author Rachel Vincent was Tweeting about fit into the story. This is totally worth the read - for free or otherwise.

Reaper can be read at any point during the series, but would recommend at least one or two of the books be read first so that there is a better understanding of the setting and characters.
